Legal assessment tool for Taylor Wessing

International law firm Taylor Wessing selects Rainbird to build and deploy a self-assessment triage tool for customers affected by changes in legislation.

Taylor Wessing engaged Rainbird to develop a legal assessment tool that works with clients across numerous dynamic industries.

The firm wanted to identify new ways of servicing its clients.

Taylor Wessing selected Rainbird’s Decision Intelligence platform because of its ability to apply existing human knowledge to problems and provide a rationale for every automated judgement made.

The problem

Traditionally, lawyers identify client needs by manually comparing their circumstances with upcoming changes in legislation. This is a highly repetitive task. Like any human task, the process is costly. It uses up valuable time for their lawyers and clients and is vulnerable to error.

In-house legal departments spend up to 50% of their time renewing contracts as basic as a Non-Disclosure Agreement. Automating these kinds of time-intensive manual processes saves countless lawyer-hours.

Taylor Wessing

Taylor Wessing recognised that Rainbird had the potential to take on much of this process. This is because Rainbird can accurately and rapidly analyse existing opportunities and triage new enquiries leveraging not only data but the expertise of Taylor Wessing’s best specialists.

Rainbird is able to assess each client’s needs, resulting in an automated pipeline of work. This leaves the lawyers to do what they do best, providing a high-quality service to their clients.

The firm identified a piece of legislation that would be ideal to trial this concept. The timing of the Modern Slavery Act, and the requirements it places on organisations, made this a great time to deploy a solution.

The Modern Slavery Act establishes a range of measures on how the UK deals with modern slavery and human trafficking. All obligated businesses must publish a ‘slavery and human trafficking statement’ for each financial year. The burden on organisations is coming into focus as each organisation faces the financial year-end.

The solution

Taylor Wessing engaged Rainbird to build and deploy a legal assessment tool that any client affected by the legislation can use.

We worked with a team of the firm’s expert lawyers to encode their knowledge of the Modern Slavery Act into extended knowledge graphs over which Rainbird could reason. Together we modelled how clients with different attributes are impacted by different parts of the act.

Taylor Wessing could then provide any client with a tailored report that clearly describes the level of risk they were exposed to. The report also outlined the actions required for them to comply with the legislation. They also received a statement of work and quotation for any billable services required by Taylor Wessing.

Unlike other AI solutions, Rainbird provides a rationale for every judgement it makes, which acts as a full audit trail for this automated decisioning. Lawyers are able to explore the ‘thinking’ that went into each report, giving them confidence that the logic is being properly and consistently applied while enabling them to remain in total control of the process as legislation evolves.

Rainbird remembers every interaction, enabling Rainbird to take what it has learnt into account to better inform future judgements.

The outcome

Taylor Wessing increased their operational efficiency while also winning new business through the tool.
